International Deaf Day event

Kota Kinabalu: A carnival, Zumba dance, a three-round run at the Taman Tun Fuad Stephens Track, Bukit Padang, and Muay Thai (Thai boxing) performance are among the activities lined up to mark International Deaf Day 2016 (IDD) tomorrow (Sunday) at the premises of the Sabah Society for the Deaf (SSD) and the Taman from 6am to 12.30pm.President of SSD, Francis Yong said the IDD 2016 celebration with the theme 'With Sign Language, I Am Equal' is organised by the Society in collaboration with SK Pendidikan Khas, KK, SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin, SMK Taman Ria, Kolej Vokasional Keningau, Politeknik KK, Sabah Deaf Sports Association and Sabah Deaf Youth Association.He said the objectives are to promote understanding of Deaf issues and to mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of Deaf people, to showcase their talents or skills, and to provide an opportunity for cultural exchange, fellowship and networking among the Deaf community.

IDD or International Week of the Deaf is celebrated worldwide in the last full week of September every year. This is an initiative by The World Federation of the Deaf, which is an international organisation.
