Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is now simply like another region of the Philippines and Indonesia where immigrants from these two nations come and go quite easily, according to Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) Vice President 2 Saban Sawayan."We have seen how uncomfortable Sabahans feel about the huge presence of illegal immigrants and again we are confounded by the video showing police officers manning the port/jetty in Tawau receiving bribes from criminals.

"A few years ago Sabah suffered the Suluk terrorist incursion in Tanduo, Lahad Datu and several recent kidnappings by Abu Sayyaf from the Southern Philippines in the waters off Sandakan.

"This shocking video may be just the tip of the iceberg and Sabahans have started to lose confidence in the police force," he said in a statement here Friday in response to reports over the video broadcast by TransMedia Indonesia.

TransMedia Indonesia alleged that hundreds of illegal immigrants enter Tawau easily by bribing officers with between RM50 and RM100.

The video was also uploaded to YouTube on July 11, this year by Trans_7 and also on Facebook where it went viral on various social media pages.

Saban said these police are public servants paid by taxpayers' money to protect and defend the shores of Sabah from foreign enemy and criminals.

"If these members of the police force feel that the salary given to them is insufficient, they can resign and go back to their kampung (village).

"Imagine what would happen to our people if those on sampans (wooden boats) turn out to be terrorists," he said.

"If these police officers are found to be involved in corruption, then action must be taken so that the people's confidence in the police force can be restored," he said.

Police on Wednesday denied that hundreds of illegal Indonesian immigrants could cross into Tawau easily on a daily basis via Batu-Batu, Sabindo as broadcast by the TransMedia Indonesia on Kontroversi7@Trans_7.

Tawau Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus, however, said the domestic route is undoubtedly the landing point for illegal immigrants based on the fact that the district is on the border with the neighbouring country.

He was also quoted as saying that they have never compromised on issues related to immigration offences, and have continuously conducted preventive operations, investigations and detentions to curb illegal immigrants either through joint operations with other agencies or elements in the police force.

Police brought in a 38-year-old Indonesian estate labourer who appeared on the now controversial bribery video broadcast for questioning on Thursday.
