Pairin Cup starts today in K'gau

Kota Kinabalu: Boxers from four districts from West Coast Interior are set to compete to grab this year's Pairin Cup Trophy scheduled to be held starting today till Sunday.The weekend events in Keningau will also feature the selection trial to choose potential boxers to represent Sabah in the forthcoming Malaysia Cup in Perak next month.

Sabah Boxing Association President Datuk Orlando Harumal said the four participating districts in the scheduled Pairin Cup are Tambunan, Keningau, Tenom and Nabawan.

"This will be an exciting boxing event and it is for this very reason that the association is inviting everyone particularly people in Keningau and nearby areas to witness the two-day event," Orlando said. On the selection trial, he said nine qualified boxers will be selected from among the 16 aspirants who will then undergo rigid and stringent physical and mental training starting next week at the Likas Sports Complex.

He said the 16 shortlisted aspiring local boxers are Rozaidi Ezri and Arick Apar and Khairul Ajim (56kg); Rosshaire Ruslan, Naree Salim and Randall Kadayum (60kg); Mohd Nor Fidaus and Adrian James (69kg); Samuel Michael and Fizzy Ismail (75kg); Johnny Shamir and Mohd Faren Musli (81kg); Stephen Jenggieng and Mohd Arif Fitri (91kg) and Dexter Alex and Adi Erwan Samin (49kg).

Orlando said the Malaysia Cup will be held from October 8 to 13. The training of the lucky 9 boxers will be closely supervised and monitored by officials of the association comprising of a boxing coach, a manager and a trainer

The association's chairman for boxing development Darshan Singh will play an actively role to ensure that all the boxers are properly trained.
