200 fencers expected for inter-team championship

Kota Kinabalu: Some 200 fencers from 16 teams will take part in the inaugural Datuk Yap Pak Leong Challenge Trophy Inter-team Fencing Championship at the SFA Fencing Centre, Likas Sports Complex, tomorrow (Sunday).Sabah Fencing Association President Datuk Alex Sham said the one-day competition will have six teams and four individual events."It is open to all schools and universities in the State. The individual events are for the junior boys and girls aged 12 and below. This is part of our programmes to start early preparation for the Sukma Games in Perak in 2018 and also to develop fencers for the future," he said during a courtesy call to Yap, who is the patron of the association, with some of the organising committee at his office on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Yap who handed over the challenge trophy to Sham during the meeting said the main reason he is involved in the association and donated the challenge trophy for the competition is his wish to encourage more youngsters in the State to take up the sport.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

"I, myself was a fencer trained under a Hungarian coach back in Adelaide, Australia after my university studies 65 years ago. "I found that fencing is not only good for your physical body but it also train your spirit and brain so I really hope to see more young people here to get involve with the sport," he added.
