Five M'sian varsities in world's top one per cent

Melaka: Five Malaysian research universities have been listed as the world's top one per cent of best universities in the latest QS Quacquarelli Seymonds World University rankings of 2016/2017.They are Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said what was even gratifying was in the world top best universities under 50 years, UPM was ranked 17th, UTM (25th), UKM (26th), and USM (33rd), while UM is more than 50 years old.

"Alhamdulillah, through various programmes implemented at the five research universities, we are now among the one per cent of the world's best universities.

"We hope these universities, as well as other universities in the country, will produce more holistic graduates with emphasis in entrepreneurship and strong faith to maintain the country's peaceful prosperity in future."

Idris said this at the launching of 2016 Patriotic Students Expedition programme at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) here, which was attended by UTeM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib and more than 2,000 higher education institution students from all over Melaka.

He said young universities such as UTeM, now 16 years old, should not be see their young age as an obstacle to be among the best universities in the world.

He believed with perseverance and careful planning UTeM could also compete with the best universities in the world such as Cambridge University and Oxford University.

Meanwhile, Idris reminded all graduates of institutions of higher learning in the country to be united despite their different racial and cultural backgrounds to ensure the country continue to prosper and progress in future.

"Set aside all differences which cause us to be divided so that the country's independence could be sustained for our future generations," he said.
