Kota Kinabalu: Auxiliary police are now eligible for a life insurance protection scheme for a total coverage of RM150,000. State Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department Chief SAC Awang Besar Dullah said the insurance coverage would raise self-confidence among auxiliary police especially when carrying out police duties.

He also encouraged auxiliary police personnel to take advantage of the opportunity which is not enjoyed by the police and army.

"This is very interesting in my opinion because no insurance would provide commitment to police or soldiers due to the high risk.

"I understand that among benefits covered by this insurance is 24-hour protection in case of shooting, in addition to death and permanent disability due to road accidents caused by civilian car, personal car and department vehicle, with compensation of up to RM150,000.

"Thus, auxiliary police should take advantage of this opportunity as personal protection especially while on duty.

"We are happy, this protection is at least able to protect elements that assist police in crime prevention duties," he said at the Commandant Parade ceremony held at the State police headquarters here, recently.

He also thanked the team of volunteers who are committed to helping smoothen police duties and hoped that the cooperation and commitment will be continuous.

Meanwhile, State Police Volunteer Reserve (PVR) corps Commandant Supt/SP Paul Lajumin advised members to join the Police Volunteer Reserve corps which has now reached a membership of over 20,000 nationwide.

According to him, through the association, the extension of the retirement age to 58 for each member who is healthy, has received approval from the Inspector-General of Police.

Prior to this, he said, the retirement age for members with the rank of constable and lance corporal was 47, while those with the rank of corporal to Sub-Inspector was 50 and 55 for officers.

On the latest development of the team, Paul said the Bicycle Patrol Unit has been established here and in Penampang and that they are also targeting two districts in the East Coast namely Sandakan and Tawau to assist in crime prevention patrols.

Also present were the City Police Volunteer Chief ASP/SP Awang Usli Mohd Salleh, Penampang Police Volunteer Chief ASP/SP Joni Impoh and Tuaran Police Volunteer Chief Insp/SP Lai and 500 auxiliary police.
