51 gamblers fined a total of RM99,000

Kota Kinabalu: Fifty-one people, including eight women, were jailed and fined a total of RM99,000 by the Magistrate's Court here on Monday for involvement in an illegal gambling session in Penampang last month.Twelve of them – Phan Vui Chuan, Chia Teck Ming, Tan Oon Seong, Ho Hone Seng, Goo Wei Jiunn, Lim Kok Chu, Lai Pan Nyen, Chia Luan Sian, Teh Chia Woei, Ronald Chee Voon Fu, Chang Wei Sing and Loo Yee Min admitted to operating Baccarat and 'Buah Dadu' illegal gambling at 12.50am on Aug 19 in a premises at Block D, Bundusan Square, Jalan Bundusan.

They were sentenced to a day's jail and fined RM5,000 or 16 months' jail each.

Meanwhile, the other 39, including the women, pleaded guilty to engaging in similar gambling at the same place and time.

They were Yong Chin Fui, Lee Kim Kiong, Chia Siang Huang, Chia Chun Kiet, Choi Ah Kong, Tan Lai Seng, Tang Chin Khoon, Tan Chin Jian, Nia Ven Pein, Ngam Keng Hock, Chung Sui Min, Ang Aik Chye, Choo Sun Yuan, Tan Chun Wee, Lee Hock Beng, Nieh Vun Yu, Tan Kean Wan, Ang Boon Beng, Ngan Chee Huat, Liew Yun Ping, Tang Ah Tee; Ak Muhammad Ag Ibrahim, Liaw Wei Ming, Sadiman Saimin, Kho Ing Hoe, Ho Ah Lek, Lim Lai Ket, Sia Tein Koon, Foo Gian Chung, Yeong Swee Vun, Ong Gon Thoo, Sim Sok Heang, Wong Kui Lee, Suhanah Abdullah, Yeung Yaw Lin, Chen Xiaoxia, Luzviminda Viloria Esiabillo, Mary Jane Tocmohanaton and Dun Woodie Ecoin.

The 39 were also handed a day's jail and ordered to pay a fine of RM1,000 or 12 months' jail.

All 51, aged between 20 and 67, were ordered to serve the jail term from Monday.

Earlier, Inspector P. Nathan, prosecuting, told the court that police acting on a tip-off raided the place and arrested 12 workers and people who were gambling in the premises.

The police seized four tables, chips and playing cards from the premises as well RM100,489 in cash.

Investigations revealed that the 12 men were caretakers in the premises where they were paid between RM100 and RM150 a day from 3pm to 3am or 4am daily.

All 51 requested for leniency and the 39 people told the court that they came to the premises just to gamble and not attend any function or occasion there.

Nathan however, applied for a deterrent sentence as a lesson to the offenders on the grounds that they were too confident they would only be fined.

The 12 caretakers were charged under Section 4(1)© of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 while the 39 were charged under Section 6(1) of the same Act.

The court also ordered foreigners Chen Xiaoxia, Luzviminda Viloria Esiabillo, Mary Jane Tocmohanaton, Dun Woodie Ecoin referred to the Immigration Department after serving their sentence.
