Murut NGO wants apology for book error

Tenom: Sabah Mamagun NGO Organisation (Mamagun) protested the content of a Form One History textbook published by Dewan Bahasa Pustaka (DBP) with regards to the 'Funeral Custom' of the Murut people which it said was inaccurate and insulting to the community.In Page 196 of the textbook on Paragraph 3, authors of the book alleged that the dead body of the Murut community will be put in a big earthen jar and then burned before being kept in the house for seven days.Mamagun President Rudy Sulaiman Mari said the false 'historical fact' had deeply upset the Murut community and a police report had been lodged against the Ministry of Education, State Education Department and DBP.ADVERTISEMENT Other than that, Rudy also urged the relevant authorities in the matter, especially the Ministry to withdraw the textbook from use and distribution from all secondary schools in the country.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

At the same time, he said, several people from the Murut community had accused the authors of the book as irresponsible as they failed to obtain the correct information and also for being ignorant about the customs of the Murut."The writers and publisher of the book must make a full and an open apology to the Murut community and immediately withdraw the book from distribution," he said.
