Situation becoming no longer acceptable: Chamber
Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) President Datuk Michael Lui (pic) said the latest abduction of a boat owner off Lahad Datu on Wednesday has taken the issue to a level where it is no longer tolerable nor acceptable.Commenting on the sixth such case this year alone, Lui insisted that the time has come for the Government to seriously review the role and functions of Esscom.

"The incidents took place within the curfew area. It indicates that the criminals are bold. But at the same time, it proves the inefficiency of our security system," he said in a statement.

He said it is ironic that the incidents keep happening while the Government continues to assure that it has taken a lot of efforts in strengthening Esscom.

"What and where actually it went wrong?" he asked, adding that the public are losing confidence in Esscom.

He also said that unless the government puts an end to the problem, the people will find it difficult to go about their daily lives while investors and tourists will lose their confidence as well.

Cross border criminals struck boldly yet again Tuesday by taking a local boat owner hostage and stealing valuables from another boat in waters off Semporna and Lahad Datu, all within 30 minutes apart.

Last month, an Indonesian skipper of a trawler boats was reported to have been kidnapped by a group of armed men in Kertam waters, off Kinabatangan, Sandakan.

A month earlier, three Indonesians were abducted from a trawler in Lahad Datu waters near Sinakut, only 2.6 nautical miles from shore.
