Labuan: MIC here wants to be directly affiliated with MIC Kuala Lumpur saying since the island is a component of Federal Territories, it is out of place for Labuan to be under Sabah MIC.This was among several proposals by MIC Chairman here, Ramasamy Rengsamy, to MIC President Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam during the recent 18th Sabah MIC Convention held in Kota Kinabalu.

"We are not setting a precedent by asking to be placed under MIC KL. Other component parties of Barisan Nasional (BN) such as Umno and MCA have long been under KL and this proves to be convenient in many ways.

Under Sabah, it was like taking a roundabout route in bringing up party matters to KL or MIC headquarters," he said.

MIC was established here way back in 1989 and since then it has been under Sabah and considered a division of the State MIC. The party has about 200 members here and is on a membership drive to get about 100 more.

Ramasamy also wanted MIC President to make a stronger presentation for a MIC member to be provided a seat in the Advisory Council of Labuan Corporation.

He said when Labuan was under the administration of a municipality, there was a MIC councillor but after the establishment of Labuan Corporation in 2001, MIC lost the seat and until now not given a chance to serve in the council.

According to him, this issue had been brought up many times over the past few years and the standard reply given was that the number of council seats was being increased from the present seven to 11 or more and when this is done MIC would get a seat.

"How long are we going to wait for this?" asked Ramasamy.

He noted that MIC was the third largest BN component party and stood by BN loyalty in all elections.

"We should be given due recognition and not pushed to the corner in sharing the cake," he added.

The MIC delegation also took the opportunity to give the President, who is also the Health Minister, an earful on the woes of Labuan Nucleus Hospital.

He said lifts were not functioning, power supply was inadequate resulting in controlled use of air-cond system and power plugs at the wards were not allowed to be used for charging phone, etc.

He said with the increase of medical staff there should also be an improved deliverance of medical services.

According to Ramasamy, the Minister promised to visit Labuan to get a first-hand of the hospital's condition and facilities.

On the intake of Indian students at UMS Labuan International Campus and Matriculation College here, Ramasamy said the numbers were not satisfactory.

He said at the last intake at the campus only 44 Indian students got a place out of 700 and for Matriculation College nine out of 2,000 over.

Ramasamy also requested for funds for the Hindu Temple as well as the Sikh Temple and also for the temples to be provided with instruments for classical music.

He was accompanied by Datuk Dahlif Singh (Deputy), Seri Ram (Sec) and Sital Singh.
