Kota Kinabalu: There's an over 20 million market potential for the local halal entrepreneur here to tap in China, said Special Tasks Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang, on Tuesday. He said there is a potential for Malaysia to tap into the Syariah or Syariah-compliant products, with Sabah having the better advantage due to its proximity to the republic.

"In China, more than 20 million of the Muslim population are concentrated in a few provinces, like the Gangxu province, Lingxia Muslim autonomous province, and Ching Hai. It's a big market," he said.

Teo said this during a special appreciation dinner and handing over of RM30,000 contribution by Sugut Assemblyman Datuk James Ratib to the Tia Jia mosque in Lingxia, China.

This came following the conclusion of a 10-member State Legislative Assembly Delegation nine-day working visit to China, which was supported and organised by the consul-general office.

Citing they had visited a halal fruit juice factory in Lingxia, Teo noted there are room for Malaysia to tap into the halal trade, pointing out that the Malaysian Halal market is well recognised globally.

China is Malaysia's largest trading partner and has sealed a strategic partnership since 1974.

More recently, both countries had entered a more comprehensive partnership, which include cultural and tourism.

James, who handed the RM30,000 donation in benefit of the mosque to Chen, said the donation was to assist the 1,500 school children managed by the school.

He said the donation also symbolises the good ties between Malaysia and China.

"The mosques in China are beautiful, but there are still many things that could be done.

"This was why as a Muslim, I am moved to provide the contribution in the hope it could help ease the burden of the school children there as a social responsibility," he said.

The 10-member delegation comprise Teo, James, Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Deputy Speakers Datuk Johnny Mositun and Datuk Dr Johnson Tee, Assistant Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Ghulam Khan Bahadar and Datuk Bobby Suan, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah, Kepayan Assemblyman Dr Edwin Bosi and State Assembly Secretary Datuk Bernard Dalinting.
