Sandakan: Sabah DAP has reiterated its commitment to serve Sabahans despite being a national party. Its Chairman Stephen Wong said the party has been working hard since 1978 and has consistently fought for Sabahans' interests. "The DAP's 'Malaysian Malaysia' slogan includes making Sabah a better place in Malaysia.

"I think it is not a zero-sum game when it comes to the selection of national parties like DAP or local parties.

A party should deserve respect and support as long as it is proven sincere in serving Sabahans," he said in a statement, Wednesday.

According to him, a good political party is judged by its policies and ideas, instead of its registration address.

"Please don't get me wrong. I'm not attacking local parties. On the contrary, I want to work with any party including local parties to change the government.

"Over the past few days, I had criticised Junz Wong who quit DAP not because of his choice to endorse a local platform, but because he won his State seat under the DAP banner.

He should be regarded as a failure to respect the decision of voters in Likas.

"Undoubtedly, he (Junz) has the right and freedom to choose his party. But as an elected people's representative who was entrusted by the party and voters, no reason can justify his 'frog-hopping' move."

Nevertheless, Wong said, DAP is optimistic and open to work with any party that upholds similar principles and values to form an alliance in the next general election.

"DAP does not want to see the room of cooperation between Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal's new party and DAP damaged following this incident.

"In fact, DAP is willing to work with him based on mutual respect and understanding. "It was a good start when our newly- appointed Secretary-cum-Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Chan Foong Hin appeared in one function hosted by Shafie.

"It shows there's a chance to work together to topple Barisan Nasional in the coming GE," he said.

Wong also said there are genuine Sabahans in DAP Sabah who equally want to change Sabah and fight for its equal rights.

"Our leaders have a good track record in the Parliament and the State Legislative Assembly where they have consistently raised issues related to Sabah.

"I, as the Sandakan Member of Parliament, had tabled a Private Member's Bill in the Parliament to seek for an amendment to the Federal Constitution to restore Sabah's position in the Constitution – from one of the 13 states back to one third of the equal partnership in the Federation.

"We also come out with the idea of 'New Federalism' where the Malaysia Federation must be reformed and restructured so that Sabah and Sarawak's statuses as equal partners can be reinstated and given autonomy in respect to the spirit of Federalism."

"The only way to save Sabah is to unite with national parties to bring reforms as well as to amend the Federal Constitution."
