Get permit, Uber operators told
Kota Kinabalu: The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) in Sabah has advised Uber operators to come forward to apply for permits before operating in the State. Its Chairman Datuk Raime Unggi (pic) said as the modus operandi of the Uber service in Sabah is the same as "pirate taxis", the operators must apply for permits from the authorities.

"As long as the Uber or Grabcar operators do not apply for permits, they are treated as operating illegally as Section 33 of the CVLB Act clearly stipulates the prohibition on the use of public service vehicles that are not licensed.

Similar to pirate taxis carrying passengers without a permit, they will be constantly monitored by the police and the Road Transport Department (RTD).

"Actions taken by the police and RTD on Uber motorists including seizing and forfeiture of the vehicles are provided for in Section 51 of the CVLB Act," he said in a statement, Thursday.

Raimie, which also Tenom MP, was responding to calls from various parties who want the Government to allow Uber to operate in Sabah.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Nancy Shukri, was quoted as saying that action may be taken against Uber in Sabah and Sarawak as the current modus operandi is the same as "pirate taxis".

She said Uber has not submitted any application for a permit to the CVLB in the two states.

Raime stressed that CVLB just wants Uber and Grabcar operators to comply with the law in order to ensure the security and the interests of passengers remain a priority.

"As a passenger, you will definitely choose public transportation including taxis licensed and complying with current regulations.

"We want to ensure that illegal vehicle services can be contained to ensure the safety and welfare of passengers."

Raimie said so far, Uber has not come up to CVLB Sabah to apply for permits for the operation of Uber vehicles in the State.
