Kota Kinabalu: Api-Api Assemblywoman Christina Liew urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to continue its crime-busting efforts and intelligence gathering strategy in fighting graft in the public sector, without fear or favour. "I commend the MACC for their laudable work and urge them to also check on the other departments and agencies, if warranted. Don't just stop in your tracks in combating corruption at the government agency believed to be the State Water Department," she said in a statement, Thursday.

Liew, who is Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Deputy Chairperson, was commenting on MACC's huge success in having seized a total of RM114.5 million cash, reportedly the biggest in the history of MACC since its establishment 49 years ago.

On Wednesday, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations), Datuk Azam Baki told a press conference that two top officials of a Sabah government agency were among four people remanded for seven days in a case of abuse of power involving infrastructure projects valued at RM3.3 billion.

Against this backdrop, Liew aptly named it the Watergate Operation, saying it is befitting, given the substantial sum of money involved. She said it was reminiscent of "Watergate" which was a major political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s, adding Sabah is getting famous for the wrong reasons.

Liew exhorted the MACC to cast its net wider to nab others who may be involved in the scandal.

"I also call on the MACC to disclose who else are involved in this scandal upon completion of their investigations.

"More importantly, I hope the Commission will be transparent with the result of their investigations, such as who was the mastermind and who were the other parties implicated. "At the end of the day, who gets to keep the millions of cash, money in the bank accounts, jewellery, expensive goods and luxury cars seized in this major operation?" she asked.
