Graft to be major issue incoming polls: Yong
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President Datuk Yong Teck Lee said state and federal ministries and other agencies have also to answer about the reported multi-million graft case involving two top officials of the Sabah Water Department."One thing for sure, it takes more than a department director and his deputy to process, approve and implement a whopping RM3.3 billion in development funds. State and federal ministries, the Economic Planning Unit, Audit Department, among others, have some answering to do," he said in a statement.

Yong, a former Sabah Chief Minister, however expressed disappointment that Barisan Nasional ministers have instead washed their hands over the controversy.

"BN government ministers who have been proudly boasting about close co-operation between Sabah and federal governments are now sheepishly trying to wash their hands off the RM3.3 billion rural water projects funded by the Federal Government."

"(The) ministers have claimed credit for bringing development projects to Sabah but when something goes wrong like now, they want to distance themselves from the controversy," he said.

He believed that the truth will eventually surface.

"There is a wise saying that the sun, the moon and the truths shall not be hidden long. And as the truths and facts emerge, it is to be expected that people will be dismayed and feel angry," he said.

Yong predicted that corruption will become a major issue in the coming election. He said people are eager for answers on so many issues in view of the scale of the reported corruption.

But he said it is still too early at the current stage of the investigation to assign political responsibility for the crisis as the department.

"Therefore, DAP's call for the resignation of the Sabah Infrastructure (Development) Minister is premature.

Indeed people may also ask DAP about the calls for resignation of the Penang Chief Minister who is currently facing corruption charges," he added.
