Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee said there is need to go down to the ground in order to learn more about the actual situation of the schools and religious bodies that applied for the State Governments allocation for non- Islamic bodies. "In processing the applications, we found that some schools and religious bodies have applied funding for the same development or maintenance projects which they submitted last year.

"We also noticed that the figures have been inflated in some applications," he said. Each year the State Government gives out some RM30m in allocations.

Teo has led the committee tasked with handling the allocation to visit SM All Saints, Likas, SK St Catherine, Inanam, Nam Tien Kong (Jiu Wang Da Di), Persatuan Penganut Agama Tantrayana Chen Foo Chung Benjue Tang Sabah, Persatuan Taoism San Ching, SJK(C) Lok Yuk, Menggatal, Church of Divine Mercy, KKIP and St Catherine Church, Putatan.

Teo said the committee also found that some organisations have applied for the State Government's allocation despite having sufficient financial resources, while some development projects have been delayed for up to six years.

He added that the State Government required schools and religious bodies to submit their progress report and photographs of ongoing development projects along with their applications, but many only handed in a brief report.

"As such, there is a need to turun padang to see the actual situation."

As the State Government's allocation is limited, Teo said priority would be given to schools, churches and temples with more pressing needs. He hoped that the recipients would use the State Government's allocation for the intended development or maintenance projects instead of saving the funds as fixed deposit or spend it for other purposes.

Also present were State Assistance Finance Minister Datuk Seri Michael Asang, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah, Assistant State Education Director Tham Yun Fook, Political Secretary to the Minister of Special Tasks, Peter Chong, and Liaison Secretary to the Minister of Special Tasks Albert Kok.
