Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan was among many leaders from across the spectrum who expressed sadness over the passing of Puan Sri Yeh Lim York Sham at age 85 on Tuesday morning. The Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) President described the late Puan Sri Yeh as a person who was kind and gentle but firm in her views.

He said he had known the late Tan Sri Yeh as the latter was his colleague when he (Pairin) was a member of the Berjaya party that was in power then.

"I express my heartfelt condolence to Datuk Clement Yeh and all members of their family during this difficult period.

"My wife and I pray that the Almighty will give them the necessary strength during period. May God rest her soul in peace," said Pairin.

The widow of Stephens, Toh Puan Rahimah, said she was also saddened to hear about the passing of Puan Sri Yeh, who was an old friend since the 1960s.

"I convey my heartfelt condolences to all her family members. The late Puan Sri was an old friend of us whom we have known since the 1960s.

"I have always known her to be a kind and generous person. I am sure she will be missed by all," she said.

Special Tasks Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang also extended his deepest condolences to Datuk Clement Yeh and family.

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President said the passing of Puan Sri Yeh was not only the loss of a matriarch in the family but also a respectable figure in the press industry in Sabah.

Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) President Datuk Michael Lui said the late Puan Sri Yeh was a very hardworking lady who was devoted in helping her husband, the late Tan Sri Yeh Pao Tzu, to continue operating OCDN and later the birth of Daily Express.

Although it has been almost 30 years (since Tan Sri Yeh's passing), he said the late Puan Sri took the lead and together with her son and children kept on ensuring the running of both newspapers that have created many achievements.

Other than this, Lui said the late Puan Sri was also a well-known leader among the women's Chinese community as she was committed and concerned in improving welfare and interest of the Chinese women as well as education matters.

"The late Puan Sri Yeh was one of the founders of the oldest Chinese kindergarten, Tzu Yu Kindergarten here and also one of the founders of the Kota Kinabalu Chinese Association.

"She was very supportive to the kindergarten and the association and always did charity work that improved the quality of education and society, especially women and children.

"I still remember her full support, kindness and generosity where she would never refuse to render monetary assistance and contributions to any Chinese NGOs that came to approach her. She would definitely help them," he said, and who added that the late Puan Sri was made the honorary Chairman of KKCCCI from 2000 until 2009.

Lui said the late Puan Sri was also known to have a strong personality, kind and full of compassion not only to the Chinese community but also to her employees whom she treated well and were concerned for their wellbeing.

"Hence, KKCCCI views the demise of Puan Sri Yeh as a great loss to the Chinese community in Sabah and society, in general, will be missing a lady leader who was devoted and committed to helping the community," he said.

Lui said he was pleased that Datuk Clement Yeh as Managing Director of Sabah Publishing House Sdn Bhd and family members continue to run both well-known and oldest newspapers for the public in Sabah.
