New King to be chosen today

Kuala Lumpur: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Thursday attended the 242nd Meeting of the Conference of Rulers, held for the second day at Istana Negara, here.The meeting, chaired by the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, was also attended by all the royal Malay rulers, accompanied by their respective menteri besar, except for the Sultan of Pahang who did not send a representative.

The Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak who were present, were accompanied by their respective chief minister.

Also present was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Special Meeting of the Conference of Rulers will be held today (Friday) to elect the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, to succeed the current King, Tuanku Abdul Halim whose five-year term since Dec 13, 2011 will end this Dec 12.

Based on the rotation system in appointing the Malaysian King, the next in line is the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V.

Voting by the nine royal rulers will be by secret ballots and if the candidate receives at least five votes, the chosen ruler will officially be the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The same voting is repeated for the post of Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who will act on the King's behalf during His Majesty's absence in the country or due to illness.

Meanwhile, Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad in a statement noted that at Thursday's meeting, the rulers were briefed on the current state of the nation's defence by Malaysian Armed Forces chief, General Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd in.

The rulers were also briefed on security by Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and on the economy by director-general of the Economic Planning Unit, Datuk Seri Dr Rahamat Bivi Yusoff.

Syed Danial said other matters discussed were the appointment of members of the Islamic Education Coordination Advisory Board (Lepai), and appointments of the Auditor-General, appellate court judges, members of the Election Commission, deputy chairman and members of the Public Service Commission, and chairman and members of the Education Services Commission.

The position and proceedings of the National Fatwa Council for Religious Affairs in Malaysia (MKI) and the decisions/views on Islamic law that were agreed upon at the MKI Fatwa Committee Muzakarah were also touched upon at today's meeting of the rulers. – Bernama
