China tourist drowns in Mataking

Semporna: A tourist from China in his early 30s drowned while snorkelling at the Reef Dive Resort area in Mataking Island at about 4.30pm, here, on Sunday. District Police Chief Supt Peter Umbuas identified the deceased as Xhiong Qin Yu who was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Prior to the incident, a beach security guard saw a tourist waving for help and shouting that someone was drowning. ADVERTISEMENT "The guard alerted the Dive Centre for assistance and together with another guard, rushed to save the victim. "One of the guards jumped into the water and pulled the man to the beach where he was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation. "By that time, more staff from the Dive Centre arrived at the scene and tried their best to revive the victim," said Umbuas, adding that the man's nose was also bleeding. Umbuas said early findings showed that the victim was not wearing a life jacket when he was pulled back to the beach. He said initial inspections showed no foul play was involved.
