Kota Kinabalu: Former Sabah DAP Secretary and Likas Assemblyman Junz Wong is hoping that local Chinese youths will quickly understand the importance of supporting a local-based party so that Sabahans, especially the youths, will unite once again as one people.Wong who joined forces with Semporna MP Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and Penampang MP Darell Leiking to form Parti Warisan Sabah said the setting-up of the party is an opportunity for Sabahan leaders to fight for a right cause for the State and its people.

"I know these youths are emotional and passionate and I believe they make up the larger part of the group who are calling me 'frog' and 'traitor' right now.

"As for KDM youths, they are more aware of our rights as Sabahans and are more than ready to support a local-based party to rid us of Umno in Sabah.

"The Muslim community might swing en bloc this time around, as they have never being presented with an alternative for the last 22 years since Umno entered Sabah, with Shafie forming a local-based multiracial party to fight for anak Sabah," he said.

Wong said he believed that Sabahan voters have been waiting for a long time for an opportunity like this to regain their dignity, autonomy, rights and make their own decisions without having to refer to Putrajaya every time.

"I urge all my people of Sabah, for the sake of our future generations, to unite as one to seize this golden opportunity to not only fight for the right cause for Sabah but to create history by changing the Malaysian political landscape forever so that Sabah can play an influential role as partner to decide the future direction, future policy of Malaysia," he said.

The Parti Warisan Sabah Vice President also said the problem with Sabah politics had always been its divisiveness with too many parties claiming to represent different ethnic groups, a dire situation considering that Sabah has more than 30 ethnic groups.

Therefore, he said, it has always been his belief that Sabah should find one leader under one local platform to unite most of her prominent leaders, both senior and young leaders.

"I believe if we all can unite under Shafie as a strong enough opposition with good leaders to compete with BN, then that will be our best chance. I don't encourage more parties to be registered," he said, alluding that the more than a dozen local-based opposition parties are just too many already.

Wong also stated that local parties could work amicably with Malaya-based parties as long as these parties respect and understand the needs of Sabahans and practise a more hands-off type of administration when it comes to Sabah.

If these Malaya-based parties wish to remain relevant, he said, then they should play their roles to assist Sabah-based parties in toppling the ruling BN State government and the local parties will, in return, help them capture Putrajaya.

Personally, he said, his main focus will be Borneonisation particularly in Federal departments in Sabah, more Sabahan teachers to replace Malayan teachers, fair distribution of oil and gas royalty and localised oil and gas development and the setting up of an international port in Sabah for direct import and export.

He also wished to see more downstream industrialisation and active and vibrant manufacturing sectors in the State, a dream some said is stunted due to the cabotage policy.
