Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah DanceSport Association (SBDA) looks set to promote the sport across the State in a big way following their registration with the State Sports Commissioner this year. It's protem President John Chong said on Tuesday that their main objective has always been to make dancesport accessible to a wider audience and also to develop young athletes to compete for the State and country in the future.

"We take every opportunity to promote it accordingly, ever mindful that dancesport can appeal to different people in many different ways."

He said in order to fulfil and achieve this objective the Association will have to organise training courses for officials such as dance teachers or coaches, especially those with ISTD (Imperial School of Teachers of Dancing, UK) qualification, Adjudicators, Scrutineers as well as the dancers or athletes.

"The training courses in Sabah need to take off very soon and shall be open to all interested dancers, otherwise, we will be lagging behind other states in Malaysia.

"Recently I was invited by the Sarawak Ministry of Youth and Sports and the President of the Sarawak DanceSport Association to conduct such courses in Kuching which was very successful held."

He also hoped that DanceSport as one of the sports under the Ministry of Youth and Sports will make their way to schools in Sabah as extra curriculum for the students in the near future.

"I understand that with the recommendation of the Ministry of Education, dance teachers from the Kuala Lumpur DanceSports Association have already started teaching in various schools in Kuala Lumpur, and we hope our Sabah dance teachers can get to do that as well soon with the support of the Education Ministry here."

John, who is an ISTD Fellow in Latin and Ballroom also disclosed that an ISTD examination will be held here from November 22-24 and among the seven professional candidates taking the Fellowship exams are Camelia Devi Lasmana in Latin and Chiew Han Liang in Modern Ballroom or Standard.

"The examination covers practical and theoretical questions for a duration of two and a half hours conducted by two experienced examiners from the UK, and we wish Camelia and Chiew, our life members and all the other candidates all the best and make us proud. "

SBDA which started out as Kinabalu Ballroom Dancers Association held their 20th anniversary dinner on Saturday to commemorate the milestones of promoting ballroom dancing as a form of exercise and healthy recreation as well as a sport in the state.

Meanwhile, the protem committee have until March 2017 to conduct its first AGM for the election of a new Executive Committee and in the meantime, application for membership is still open.
