Kota Kinabalu: The setting up of a new party, Parti Warisan Sabah, by former Umno Vice President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal is a blessing in disguise for the Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno in Sabah.Pakatan NGO Pro BN Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said the establishment of the new party that has been approved by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) would not affect the strength of BN and Umno in the State.

This is because, he said, the most affected political parties are Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and DAP in the State as a majority of their leaders have quit to join other parties, including Shafie's new party.

"Shafie is now trying to portray himself as the champion of Sabah's people rights, needs and interests but actually he has forgotten the mistakes he did for the people in Sabah which I believe the people are very mature about and they do not forget what Sabah leaders do and don't do for them and the State.

"Although the former Minister of Rural and Regional Development had huge opportunity to provide basic infrastructures to the people when the ministry was allocated RM3 to RM5 billion a year, apparently there are still many villages in Sabah that have yet to be supplied with good roads, electricity and water supplies.

"If Shafie allocated 30 per cent of the Federal funds in a year for Sabah's infrastructure, I am confident that all roads in the rural areas would be fully addressed and benefiting the communities," he said to Daily Express here Tuesday.

Zulkarnain was commenting on a Tuesday report that RoS has approved the change of a Sabah-based party's name for Shafie's new party from Parti Pembangunan Warisan Sabah to Parti Warisan Sabah.

It was further reported that the Semporna MP would be the new party chief and his deputy the Penampang MP Darrell Leiking who was previously with PKR.

Zulkarnain said Shafie should have channelled the funds of the ministry which he led before he quit Umno to district offices as the latter have accurate information on infrastructures that need to be repaired and upgraded.

Furthermore, he said the district office has its own District Action Council that would discuss and look into physical development problems including infrastructures and identify the physical needs of the people in their respective areas.

Therefore, he said the move by Shafie who claimed to be the voice of the people in Sabah was merely rhetoric and that he just wants to take revenge against BN in Sabah that has been good to him in many aspects.

"What Shafie has now are the contributions and good deeds given by BN to him before.

Nonetheless, I believe the people are smart to evaluate who Shafie is," he said.
