Having bombed fish: Seven Filipinos jailed

Kota Kinabalu: Seven Filipinos were jailed a year and fined RM20,000 in default 12 months' jail each for having 400gm of bombed fish.Suharto Pain, 48, Hasim Basilio, 27, Mohammad Utunain, 26, Mukramin Roslan, 26, Taib Kadir, 28, Danibol Jurahim, 35, and Imran Roslan, 18, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad on Tuesday.They were found having various types of bombed fish at 11.30pm on Oct 10, this year at the Pulau Gaya waters, near here.ADVERTISEMENT They committed the offence under Section 26(1)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1985, punishable under Section 25(b) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of RM20,000 or a jail term of up to two years, or both, on conviction. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurun Nazifah Muhammad Iyen from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency urged the court to hand down a deterrent sentence on the grounds that fish bombing is getting rampant.ADVERTISEMENT She said the activity would not only kill the fish but also destroy other marine life.
