Presenting common stand on Cabotage

Kota Kinabalu: Some 20 groups comprising trade associations/chambers, professional associations, educational institutions, port officers and individuals spoke with one voice on Cabotage Policy during a meeting organised by Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI) on 19 October 2016 at Wisma FSM in Jalan Sepanggar, Menggatal. The discussion was led by FSI Honorary Life President & Chairman of FSI Cabotage Committee, Datuk Seri Panglima Wong Khen Thau. FSI President, Datuk Mohd Basri was in attendance. It was a preparatory briefing ahead of a dialogue initiated and to be led by Foreign Minister, YB Datuk Seri Anifah Aman with the Minister of Transport. ADVERTISEMENT FSI has been invited to present the paper on Cabotage Policy during the dialogue, the date of which is yet to be confirmed. Among others, the paper will highlight the two-pronged effects of the Cabotage Policy on the Sabah industry and on prices of goods in Sabah and offered formula for solutions and declaration on the negative effects brought on by the Policy over the decades.The proposed solutions to be highlighted to the Minister of Transport are designating Sepanggar Bay Container Terminal as Malaysia's other transshipment hub to serve the Far East region, full liberation of the Port Klang and KK Port route, introduce a Freight Equalization Scheme (similar to the Tasmanian Freight Equalization Scheme) to compensate cost for Sabah shippers, establishment of a Logistics Council to monitor the cost structure and efficiency of shipping companies and to establish a realistic timeframe to eventual abolishment of the infamous policy.
