Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) hailed the assurance of Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman's opposition to the Syariah Bill proposed by PAS leader Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang."We are glad that we have the first Umno leader to state his opposition after the Sarawak Barisan Nasional reiterated its opposition to the introduction of Hudud in the country."PBRS is expecting most parties in Sabah and Sarawak to cross party lines ensuring the defeat of the Syariah Bill proposed by Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang," said the party Secretary General Datuk Dr Johnson Tee.

He urged all lawmakers across the aisle to block the passage of the Syariah Bill through Parliament, adding that the law will not augur well in Malaysia's harmonious nature, especially those in Sabah and Sarawak. "Hadi's assurance that the Bill, if passed, would only apply to Muslims in the country, is doubtful. "While the Bill seeks to give powers to the states to provide sentences short of death, it must be understood that the powers must remain with the Federal Government as in the Federal list; once the Bill becomes law, the Government has no choice but to amend the Federal constitution. "Such Bill would surely go against the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, which is the freedom of religion as the Bill is intruding into the area of criminal law that is under the purview of the Federal Government," he said.
