Kota Kinabalu: If Superman were a Sabahan, then he must be Jaimun Kulimin from Kg Pahu, Ranau. The 54-year-old was spotted recently carrying a telecommunication switch cabinet weighing over 60kg to Laban Ratan at 11,000ft. Jaimun, a father of six, is a retired naval officer-turned- Mount Kinabalu porter since four years ago. Throughout his days as a porter, Jaimun had borne parts of transmission tower steel bars, construction materials, food supplies and rubbish on his back along the mountain trails.

The porter gets paid by the weight and the fee starts from around RM5 per kg depending on the load. There are about 51 porters working full time at Mount Kinabalu.
"The income is just enough for me to support my family," said Jaimun. The might of the Sabah porters is only rivalled by those of the Kapit porters group who at times have to transfer motorcycles weighing over 90kg off ferries and on the nearby Kapit jetty.
