Fifth suspect freed on bail

Kota Kinabalu: A former Deputy Director of the Water Department – the fifth suspect roped in to assist in investigations into a RM3.3billion scandal involving the department – was released on Wednesday.Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie made the order on the 62-year-old who is presently the technical and engineering adviser to the Finance Ministry when his six-day remand expired.Abbie released the man on a bail of RM500,000, undeposited, in two local sureties and ordered him to report to the nearest Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office every month.ADVERTISEMENT Investigating Officer Mohd Faliq Basiruddin from the MACC informed that the suspect would be recalled anytime if needed to help in the investigation.Counsel Edward Paul, Chin Tek Ming, Baldev Singh and Karpaljit Singh acted for the suspect.Earlier, the court also released the director of the department, his deputy, his 'Datuk' businessman brother and the latter's accountant, on bail after they were remanded for between 12 and 14 days to facilitate investigation on the scandal.The director and his deputy aged 54 and 51 are suspected of monopolising projects valued at more than RM3.3 billion under the purview of their department since 2010 by giving them to relatives.ADVERTISEMENT Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

They are also believed to have amassed more than RM50 million in wealth.With investigations continuing into the scandal, so far 82 witnesses have been pulled up for questioning.
