Penampang: Momogun National Congress (MNC) has engaged and held discussions with at least 20 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) representing ethnic communities in Sabah to refine its proposal for the adoption of "Momogun" as the generic term and national identity for all Dusunic, Murutic and Paitanic speech groups in government forms and national statistics. Its Deputy President Datuk Christine Van Houten, in a statement, said a significant progress was made in the discussion and consensus-building initiative.

"While 16 of the 25 or so NGOs represent local ethnic or sub ethnic groups, the rest are local NGOs whose membership or organisational orientation serves the interest of the local native community," said the former Senator.

She announced that following the discussion process, a decision was reached to hold the Momogun National Convention 2016 involving local NGOs to publicly give their support for the adoption of "Momogun" as a generic national identity for their respective community in government official forms and the national statistics.

She said the convention will be held on Oct 29 (Saturday) from 8m 6pm at the Kota Kinabalu Community Centre and expects some 350 delegates from at least 20 NGOs representing the various ethnic communities to attend.

She stressed that contrary to allegations, MNC has no intention to bulldoze its proposal to the Government as MNC will strictly follow protocols, procedures or conventions in achieving its objectives.

She also said not all native NGOs will be coming to the Momogun national convention for only those with the necessary mandate from their respective supreme councils should participate to make their official stand on "Momogun."

She clarified that MNC views the term "Momogun" not as an ethnic identity but a classification of people of the same stock to refer to the Dusunic, Murutic and Paitanic speech communities.

She said Momogun can be used to replace acronyms such as KDM or KDMRLS to refer to the Kadazandusun and Murut community.

She assured members of the Kadazandusun and Murut community that by adopting "Momogun", no ethnic group would be relegated to sub ethnic status, since it is a generic term for the purpose of statistical classification in all government forms.

She said "Momogun" has been used since time immemorial and is documented in historical records as well as preserved in the local dialect of the Rungus tribal community in Kudat.
