Unlikely Sabah will agree to shut down colleges: Masidi
Kota Kinabalu: State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun (pic) said he believed the State Government will not agree to the so-called plans by the Education Ministry to shut down two teaching colleges in Sabah.Masidi was commenting over purported plans to shut down nine teaching colleges, two of them in Sabah, namely Keningau and the Gaya Teaching Colleges after being rendered "non-cost effective".

According to information received by the Daily Express, the proposal was made "verbally" by a key individual during an Education Ministry's Teaching Institute Status Coordinating Meeting in Putrajaya on Oct 11.

The source had requested anonymity for fear of employer reprisal.

"At this point of time, nothing official has been issued. So it is not appropriate to comment on the matter.

But suffice to say, I believe the State Government is not agreeable to such move," said Masidi when contacted on Thursday.

News of the ministry's proposal received widespread criticism among Sabahans over social media who demanded answers from the authorities over the matter.

One social media user, Sabile Amad, said, "It is one way to kill off Sabah's history."

He was referring to the Gaya Teachers College which was opened in 1963 to produce more English teachers in the State.

Another feared local trainee teachers would be thereafter sent to other colleges like in Peninsular Malaysia if the ministry's plans go through.

He said this in light of the Education Ministry's 90:10 initiative to have 90 per cent of Sabahan teachers work in the State.

Education Director Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul is yet to respond to the report.
