Kuala Lumpur: Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Secretary-General, Datuk Low Beng Choo is confident that the RM450 million allocation in Budget 2017 is sufficient for Malaysia to host the best SEA Games (SEAG) and Asean Para Games (APG) next year."The Malaysia SEA Games and Asean Para Games Organising Committee will be able to work within the allocated budget, despite a 10 per cent reduction from the RM500 million proposed by Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin.

"It is a very reasonable figure. It is normal when you submit a proposal, you do not get what you want," she said.

Beng Choo was delighted by the government's recognition towards sports, with priority given on the preparation and development of athletes for international competitions.

"Training in Malaysia and taking part in local competitions is insufficient to make world class athletes.

It is important for athletes to gain their level in international competition as foreign training and competition is different.

"We need a long term plan to prepare the athletes particularly after the fantastic performance at Rio Olympics Games and Paralympics.

Meanwhile, National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said they will give priority to sports which will have an impact to achieve the goal of becoming the 2017 SEAG and APG overall champions.

"I would like to thank the government for the RM54 million budget to prepare athletes for the 2017 SEAG and APG.

"The NSC understands the need for prudence and will modify the training programmes," he added. – Bernama
