More coloured dry prawns seized in KK

Kota Kinabalu: A total of seven kilogrammes of prawns suspected to have been sprayed with colouring has been seized by enforcement teams from the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry here.The Ministry's Sabah Enforcement Chief, Yahya Sujak, in a statement here on Friday, said the seizure was done during operations carried out at the central market here on Thursday.The 11am operation was prompted by a message which claimed dried shrimps were being sprayed with food colouring to make it look fresh in Sinsuran started making its rounds on social media on Wednesday.

The team also seized colourings and vinegar found during the operations. "Investigations are being done under the Consumer Protection Act 1999," he said, adding that samples of the dried prawns, colouring and vinegar have been sent for analysis. "The Ministry views seriously the act of spraying colouring to confuse consumers into thinking that the dried prawns are of quality and sold at a high price," he said. He said they will take the matter to court should they find any wrong doing committed in this matter.

On Wednesday, City Hall's Health Department also seized 20 kilogrammes of dried prawns from individuals, believed to be traders from the Pasar Ikan Masin at the Filipino market here.
