36 months for stealing man's belongings

Kota Kinabalu: A jobless local man charged with stealing a man's belongings while he was asleep in his unlocked car and also having a stolen handphone, was sentenced to a total of 36 months' jail by the Magistrate's Court on Friday.Lias Datu Omar, 23, was jailed 22 months after he pleaded guilty to stealing one Vilvester Fong's properties at 2.30am on Sept 24 at Jalan Penampang, near Kg Kopungit here, along with an accomplice still at large.

He was also handed another 14 months jail for having a stolen handphone belonging to Vilvester at the same place and time.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus ordered Lias to serve the jail term concurrently.

Meanwhile, 27-year-old Mohd Nazar Khan Mohd Yussof was sentenced to 12 months' jail for receiving stolen credit cards belonging to Vilvester also at the same place and time.

Inspector P. Nathan, prosecuting, told the court that prior to the incident, Vilvester, who was on his way home had parked by the roadside to sleep but forgot to lock his car before doing so.

When he woke up at about 7am, Vilvester realised his belongings, among others, two handphones, a wallet containing personal documents including two credit cards and a watch were missing.

Vilvester called the banks to bar the cards from being used but was told that there were active transactions between 5am and 8.30am.

The court also heard that Mohd Nazar was identified by a worker at a tyre shop in Kepayan as having purchased tyres there using the credit card.

In another case, a 23-year-old man charged with stealing a handphone, will go on trial on Nov 17.

Kadafie Nur maintained his innocence to stealing one Nur Ashikah Laika's RM2,400 gadget at 1pm on Aug 31 in front of the Sutera Harbour here.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Md Sukri Sukarman charged with having dangerous weapons will be tried on Nov 17.

Md Sukri is accused of having two knives and a knuckle duster by the roadside at Kg Lembaga Padi in Inanam at 4.30am on Sept 15.

He was also fined RM2,300 or seven months' jail for taking drugs on Sept 16.
