Jessica cruises to Under-17 CIMB title

Kota Kinabalu: Jessica Keng lived up to expectation with a straight sets 11-6, 11-8, 11-7 win over Noor Aina Amani Ampandi to lift the girls Under-17 title in the 11th CIMB Rising Stars and 7th CIMB NJC Grand Finals at the Bukit Jalil squash courts on Sunday.The 14-year-old, who won the first and second legs of the series, earlier defeated number four seed Wong Heng Ying also in straight sets 11-7, 11-6, 11-2 in the semi-final.

Bukit Jalil Sports School-based Duncan Lee, who won the Under-15 title in the recent 2nd CMS Sarawak Open, defied the odds with his 23rd seeding in the boys Under-17 category to reach the final before losing to the fourth seed Danial Nuhaqiem Sharul 6-11, 7-11, 13-11, 8-11.

Fellow schoolmate Yee Xin Ying also made it to the final in the girls Under-15 category but was beaten by top seed Wong Heng Wai 4-11, 9-11, 5-11.

Another BJSS-based player and seventh seed Lai Wen Li came close to reaching the final when she put up a titanic battle against third seed Chan Yiwen before losing in five sets 13-11, 8-11, 11-13, 11-7, 12-14.
