Kuala Lumpur: The success of Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong in the Denmark Open Premier Super Series is a good start for the men's doubles.Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the success of the Rio Olympics silver medallists was the best platform to face future tournaments.

"They have big potential. I expect them to win the gold medal at 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, 2018 Asian Games (Indonesia) and 2018 Commonwealth Games (Australia).

"In terms of ranking, they are world number seven but are number one in the World Super Series.

I see no reason for them not to win more titles," he said after opening the National Coaching Conference 2016 in Seri Kembangan, Monday.

The Denmark Open title was the first Super Series title for V Shem/Wee Kiong who beat Bodin Isara-Nipitphon Phuangphuapet of Thailand, 14-21, 22-20, 21-19 in Odense, Sunday.

Asked about the rise of young players from China in the men's singles, Khairy said he was confident that Malaysia could rival China as proven at Rio Olympic Games.

"Maybe, there is not much progress in the the men's singles. We have to give the young players some time.

"However, we are good in other events such as the men's doubles, the mixed doubles and the women's singles, such as new hope, Goh Jin Wei," he added. – Bernama
