Over 100 object new Mangaris seat
Kota Kinabalu: The Election Commission Monday heard objections from more than 100 voters and representatives of political parties on the proposed new Mangaris (N06) State constituency in Kota Marudu at a closed door hearing at a leading hotel, here. Some were against the creation of the new constituency, while others objected the boundary.

Others said the name Mangaris had no basis either from a local historical perspective or the language, or any matter associated with the Kota Marudu area. Another wanted the name "Bandau" to replace Mangaris while some wanted the boundary to be drawn according to the defunct Langkon constituency in relation to the existing Tandek constituency as it was before.

Alias Tudin Sapaun from Kampung Tanjung Batu Darat, Kota Marudu representing a group of 106 villagers who signed the objection filed with the Election Commission on behalf of 800 voters wanted Kg Tanjung Batu Darat, Kota Marudu, to be in Tandek constituency where they were since the first election after Merdeka and not transferred to the new Mangaris constituency.

"Many villagers said they will not vote in the next election if they are to be voting in the new Mangaris constituency," he said.

Alias said it was convenient for the villagers to vote at SK Tanjung Batu in Kota Marudu than elsewhere.

He charged that certain quarters were interested to alienate the predominantly Dusun areas of relatively sparsely developed Tandek from the more infrastructural developed Mengaris area populated by Bajaus, Suluks, Chinese, Dusuns and others.

Meanwhile, Mijia Bin Jaga from Kg Lianas, Taritipan, Tandek, Kota Marudu representing 1,071 voters of Taritipan said, "The geographical location is not suitable for Taritipan to be transferred to Mangaris voting district as the distance is 30km away whereas our village from Taritipan's Tandek constituency is only 3km from the voting station.

"This also involves the people's sentiments and affect development project planning for the area and village."

With the proposed delineation exercise, the new N06 Mangaris constituency will have 13,789 voters to N07 Tandek's 13,862 voters as of September 2016.

For Mangaris, the proposed voting district areas are Taritipan, Bintasan, Mangaris, Tagaroh, Langkon, Mangin, Ranau, Popok, Bongon, Ongkilan, Tanjung Batu and Tingkalanon.
