Kota Kinabalu: The Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry's Sabah Office has issued 58 notices to traders found flouting the Price Control And Anti-Profiteering Act this year. Its State Director Yahya Sulaiman on Monday said two cases are already in the process of facing action with one other being heard in court.

"We have decided to bring a trader to court for failing to turn up at our office to respond to queries.

He was not very cooperative," he said in response to unscrupulous traders flouting the law one year after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Traders are required to respond to queries from the ministry within a stipulated timeframe set on the notices.

Yahya was met after a walkabout and State launching of the Festivities Price Control Scheme here.

Also present was the ministry's State Consumer Squad Deputy President Datuk Aminah Ambrose.

Last year, the ministry's issued around 155 notices under the same Act and two cases had to be analysed by consumer experts in Putrajaya given the complexities that arose.

Meanwhile, Yahya said the supply of cooking oil in Sabah is sufficient, including for consumers in the rural areas, until the next round of supplies arrive.

"We have already launched a check on the cooking oil supply last week in view of the lack of such supply in West Malaysia," he said.

"We found the consumer trend in Sabah is different than that of Peninsular Malaysia and hence, we expect the supply of cooking oil in Sabah to be enough until the next shipment arrives," he said.

In another development he announced that the Ministry has placed 16 items under the Festive Season Price Control Scheme in Sabah in view of the Deepavali celebration on Oct 29.

It is two items less than the one launched in the Peninsula on Oct 15. Yahya on Monday said the price control scheme will be enforced from Oct 19 to Nov 1.

He said the items were live chicken, standard chicken, super chicken, chicken eggs grade A, B and C, local boned mutton, imported boned mutton, imported boned mutton thigh and imported boneless mutton thigh.

"The other items are tomatoes, red chilli, coconut, grated coconut, shallots (India), imported onions, potatoes, tomato, (China) and lentils (Australia)," he told a press conference during a walkabout at one of the hypermarkets in Putatan.

Traders are advised to display the items with a pink price tag on these controlled items and make sure all the prices of goods are properly displayed, he said.

"It is my hope that traders will sell all the listed items not exceeding the controlled price rates.

"The ministry hopes that traders could sell lower than the rates, so customers will frequent their stores and they can enjoy good business," he said.
