Kota Kinabalu: This year's Sino Day Festival will see 13 Sino KDM beauties vying for the title Raani Tavanus Sino, one of the main highlights for the festival set to be held on Nov 19.According to the Sabah Sino Kadazandusun Murut Association (PSKS) Supreme Council member Jerry Goh, the selection of the 13 were made during an audition held at Kionsom Waterfall, Inanam last Saturday."The participants came from all over Sabah, representing their respective Sino communities," he said adding that the event will be held at the Putera Ballroom in Bukit Padang.ADVERTISEMENT The main judge and chairperson of the contest will be Datin Evelyn Sigar. The festival is the association's seventh edition since it was first held in 2010 and this year, the organising committee has invited Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman to be their guest of honour."During that day also, we will be unveiling the first post-independence Sabah Sino Natives Inventory Book, a product of years of research by the association's members," he said. The 179-page book chronicles the existence of the Sino KDM communities in the State and discusses the Sino KDM cultural impact to the State's socio-economic, the people's customs, traditional tools and technologies, sports, food, dances and music and many others.ADVERTISEMENT The data collection, said Jerry, is important to ensure that the customs inherited by the Sino KDM communities for generations will be recorded and preserved as a unique cultural heritage."The 10-month research work encompassed all districts in the State because Sino KDM people do not live only in certain areas. So we had to divide our team to four main teams namely Kota Kinabalu, East Coast, Lower Interior and Upper Interior," he said.

The Sino KDM people are products of inter-marriages between the natives of the State with the Chinese. They are unique people who maintain and enrich the customs of the natives by combining them with that of the Chinese. They also maintain their Chinese surnames, which sometimes confuse those who do not know their origin and unique identities. The Sino KDM people managed to open ASB accounts last year, an achievement which brought them closer to their objective of finally being acknowledged as fully natives of the land in the near future.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
