Duo are charged with supporting terrorist group

Kota Kinabalu: Two local men were charged at the Magistrate's Court here on Monday with involvement in terrorism activities relating to the Islamic State (IS) militant group.Administrative assistant Saifullah Sulaiman, 27, and online trader Md Ayub Idris, 32, were produced before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus.

Saifullah is accused of knowingly canvassing support for IS via the Telegram application under the name of one Ahadun Ahad @ Pomade Land on March 29 this year in front of the Sabah Government Employees Co-operative Society Bhd (Kopeks), Kompleks Sadong Jaya, Jalan Ikan Juara Satu here.

He is also accused of knowingly giving support to the militant group's use of explosives in terrorism activities carried out with intent to advance an ideological struggle and with intent to threaten the public in Malaysia via his Telegram.

The offence allegedly committed between June 25 and June 29 this year at the same place.

The first and second count framed under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code and Section 130J(1)(b) of the same Code, respectively, each provides for imprisonment for life or jail of up to 30 years or with a fine and liability of forfeiture of any property used or intended to be used in connection with the commission of the offence.

Meanwhile, Md Ayub is accused of knowingly canvassing support for IS via the Telegram application under the name of one Shagrath @ Ihsahn on March 30 this year at B16-2-12, Taman Telipok Ria, Jalan Tuaran, Telipok in Tuaran.

Both Saifullah and Md Ayub understood the charges after they were read to them separately but no plea was recorded from them.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Aida Fatimah Datuk Abdul Jabar did not offer any bail for the accused on the grounds that the offences were specified as security offences under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

She applied for another mention date pending a consent for the cases to be transferred to the High Court.

Balitus set Nov 21 for mention of the cases and ordered Saifullah and Md Ayub remanded further.

Both Saifullah and Md Ayub were represented by counsel Ram Singh and Timothy Daut.
