M'sia eye two golds at C'wealth meet

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia aims to win two gold medals at the Commonwealth Youth, Junior and Senior Championships at Spice Arena, here from Oct 26-29.National Sports Council weightlifting manager Khairun Haled Masrom said the best hopes are Mohamad Hafifi Mansor in the 69 kg and Loro Wellkinson in the 77 kg categories.

"Hafifi, who is under the Podium programme, is expected to win the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics while Wellkinson, who is under 'Kita Juara' programme is our hope at SEA Games and Commonwealth Games," he said here, Wednesday.

Wellkinson was among 12 participants under 'Kita Juara' programme with Muhammad Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar as a gold hopeful in the 56 kg category.

Among the countries participating in the championships are India, Fiji, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, China and Korea.

The championships is the first qualifying round for weightlifters to gather points for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia. – Bernama
