Penampang Chung Hwa Kindergarten to build two-storey activity centre

Kota Kinabalu: Penampang Chung Hwa Kindergarten is planning to build a two-storey activity centre next to its existing hall. Its Board of Directors Chairman Lewis Fong Tet Yee said the new building would have four activity rooms and the project is estimated to cost less than RM1 million. Construction is expected to commence next year. ADVERTISEMENT Fong said that during a courtesy call on Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang to invite the latter to officiate at the 17th graduation ceremony of the kindergarten on Nov 1 where a total of 236 schoolchildren will graduate. Once the building is completed, Fong said the existing computer room, music room and kitchen will be moved to the activity centre to ease overcrowded classrooms. The kindergarten has a total of 674 students with 35 children in each class. "People keep saying that we are taking in too many pupils. However, the population in Penampang has grown significantly since the kindergarten was established 16 years ago and hence our enrolment has also increased."ADVERTISEMENT Meanwhile, Teo said the State Government provides annual allocations to support the development of Chinese education. But due to limited funding, the government would prioritise primary and secondary schools in need and therefore the allocation available for kindergartens was relatively less, he explained.

Teo added that some kindergartens in the city have strong financial resources and thus the State Government felt that the limited funding would be best allocated to primary and secondary schools with more urgent needs.
