Sabah Structure Plan 2033 launched
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Structure Plan 2033 was launched here Thursday to steer the State towards becoming a world-class environment for living, working, studying, visiting and a conducive place for business investment that will create job opportunities.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the plan, which was approved by the State Cabinet last June, was formed through strategic policies to determine the direction and pattern of physical development of the State for the next 20 years.

"This plan is very important for the long-term development of the State. In my view, it sets the vision to turn Sabah into a state that has a world-class environment for living, working, studying, visiting and a conducive place for business investment which would create job opportunities," he said when launching the plan during the Sabah State Planning Conference.

He assured that in realising the vision in the SSP2033, Sabahans will enjoy a higher quality of life in a well-managed environment that has a sustainable system of connectivity, transportation and economy.

He said in line with public expectation on the Government to manage the growth of towns in the State well, local authorities, in particular, must ensure that Development Plans (DP) meet all the necessary requirements.

"We've received grouses from developers and consultants about delay in approval of Development Plans.

But there's no reason to delay because we all want development. However, there are requirements that must be met," he said.

The comprehensive plan, among others, aims to overcome traffic congestion in the State, connect people to places via highway and railway systems without compromising the need for environmental protection and conservation.

Meanwhile, State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor said over the past few years, the State Government has been emphasising on the need to transform towns in Sabah into livable cities.

He urged all local authorities to take the SSP2033 seriously and ensure that district and locality plans are based on policies contained in the document.

When speaking to reporters later, he said it is time Sabah do away with "rojak towns".

"The Chief Minister has said that we do not want any more 'rojak towns' in Sabah," he said.

The conference, held in conjunction with World Town Planning Day, saw the presentation of three papers in line with the theme of governance towards livable cities in Sabah.
