No cause yet for evacuation in K'gau

Keningau: There has yet to be any need for evacuation following flash floods in several low-lying areas in the district on Sunday. "We have not received any complaints from residents following flash floods so far," said District Fire and Rescue Officer Mudi Pengiran on Monday.

He urged those in need of assistance to contact them at 087-301507 for immediate help.

"Residents, especially those staying near riverbanks can also contact the police or the Welfare Department in case of emergency," he said.

River water level in several locations in the district started rising following continuous rain over the weekend.

A resident said the route at Kg Apin-Apin was submerged in water at about 5pm on Sunday, causing two vehicles plying the route to stop in their tracks.

"One of the vehicles managed to get through, but the other was carried away by strong currents," he said.

About three houses in Kg Durok were damaged by flash floods which hit the village between 5pm and 7pm on Sunday.

A total of 30 houses in the village were also affected by the flash floods. Another resident said among villages affected were Kg Mottou, Kg Contoh and Kg Senagang.

Bingkor Assemblyman Datuk Dr Jeffery Kitingan who is Star Sabah Chief advised villagers to be wary of their safety, especially during the rainy season.

He reminded those staying near river banks and low lying areas to move to safer locations to prevent untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, newly appointed District Water Department Officer Admiral A. Palandong said the water level is under control and there is no problem in getting clean water supply. "Water plants in Kg Bandukan, Kg Keningau and Kg Agudon have started to supply clean water to residents," he said, adding those with problems may contact 088-326888.
