SUBANG JAYA: Local telcos and mobile players have been urged to provide more great offerings to encourage broadband adoption by the public. In making the call, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said this would compliment the government's efforts, particularly in providing higher Internet speed at cheaper cost.

"The recent move by TM's (Telekom Malaysia) doubling up of broadband speed is a great example," he said when launching the Star Media Group's Latest Digital Product, 'Dimsum', an all-new Subscription Video-On-Demand service, here, tonight.

Also present were the Star Media Group Chairman Datuk Fu Ah Kiow and its Group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

When tabling the 2017 Budget recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that effective January next year, fixed line broadband would be priced at RM149 for 10 megabits per second (mbps) and within two years, the speed will be doubled at half the price.

Najib had also announced a RM1 billion allocation to improve the country's telecommunications network which include rural broadband projects that would see a four-fold increase in internet speed.

Salleh said the government targetted the digital economy to contribute approximately 20 percent to the Gross Domestic Product by 2020 and it was the key focus of the 2017 Budget announced by Najib at the Budget Consultation Council Meeting recently.

On this, he said the ministry was ready to play a significant role in accelerating digital economy for the development of the nation information and communications technology, particularly broadband, cloud computing, Big Data and "the Internet of Things that were already driving the digitalization of all industries".

"We will continue to focus on initiatives that will ensure digital inclusiveness for all Malaysians, expand broadband coverage and improve the quality of broadband services," he added.

Salleh noted that Malaysia recorded an impressive growth in broadband penetration rate with over 30 million broadband subscriptions recorded last year, an increase of 50 per cent from 20 million recorded in the previous year.– Bernama
