Tenom: The Government hospital, health unit, private clinics and Welfare Department in the district can assist in identifying the deaf children and help to register them in the centre. The Sabah Society for the Deaf (SSD) would turn 30 next year. Over the years, some 400 deaf children had graduated from the preschools of the society and benefited from it. SSD President Francis Yong said the earlier batches of students had all obtained employment today.

He also mentioned that the achievement gained by some deaf students in sports was something remarkable and deserved admiration.

"I am so proud of the 55 deaf youths who have contributed successfully in sports. They participated in the Sukan Orang Pekak Malaysia (Sopma ke-19) held in Kuching in early October this year. They won the first runner up with 11 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 10 bronze medals," praised Francis.

The Speech Day-cum-Graduation Day for Keningau and Tenom branches was held at the Tenom Education Centre last week.

Representatives from Tenom district hospital, leaders of the Chinese community and religious body also attended.

Francis conveyed his gratitude to the MPWS President who is also Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid, and MPWS Executive Secretary Joeanne Lee for their support in realising the newly-opened centre in Tenom for their outreach programme.

"This centre is indeed necessary for the children for their benefit who are living in this district.

"We want to impart education to these children and at the same time to build a loving and caring society.

"As there is a centre available here, please help to spread this good news, so that families in the district who have deaf children could come and register their children. This will benefit your children very much," said Francis.

He also thanked SSD Keningau branch Chairperson, Angie Ang, former Chairman Wong Kim Lan, Principal Regina Wong, welfare officers, Mustafa Osman and On Rapiah Said, social and welfare unit of Tenom hospital Tan Chew Ling, Chinese community leaders Chin Su Fook and Sonny Chew, among others.

There were also dance performances by the deaf students, testimony by the parents of the deaf and presentation of souvenirs.
