27 Filipinos on Death Row in M'sian jails

Kota Kinabalu: The Philippine Embassy said many Filipinos fear involvement in illegal drug trading activities due to capital punishment imposed by governments of foreign countries like Malaysia.Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Jose Eduardo Malaya III revealed that 27 Filipinos convicted for illegal drug trafficking are now on death row in Malaysia. However, none of the drug convicts were scheduled for execution as of press time.

"In 2013, there was an informal moratorium on executions in Malaysia," Jose said adding that eight of the total figure had been given commutation and would spend the rest of their lives behind bars.The Ambassador also said the other contributing factor on the decline of Filipinos involved in drug menace is due to the on going war against drugs declared by Philippone President Rodrigo Duterte.Towards this end, he urged all countrymen in Malaysia to strictly respect the law of the land to avoid unnecessary problems while enjoying the hospitality extended to them by the host country.Commenting on President Rodrigo Duterte's visit to Malaysia, Jose described the visit as very significant for the bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to him, the Philippine government shared efforts with Malaysia and Indonesia in addressing security issues in the Sulu Sea, particularly kidnapping, priracy and terrorism.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Apart from having a comparable total land area with the Philippines, Jose said Malaysia is the only Association Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) country with federal set up, which is a fine example to look up to.
