Kota Kinabalu: More than US$85 million (about RM345 million) worth of contracts are expected to be sealed in the three-day 7th Edition of Malaysia International Palm Oil & Agriculture Equipment Technology (PalmTech & AgroTech 2016) Expo and Conference here.Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong on Thursday said Malaysia would benefit from more than 3,500 international palm oil and agricultural industry visitors and exhibitors from various countries taking part in the event.

"The last edition of a similar event had drawn more than 5,000 visitors with 100 per cent booths fully sold.

It also averaged transactions of more than US$80 million during the three- day event.

"However, this year's event is set to host more than 3,500 international palm oil and agricultural industry visitors from countries such as the United States of America, Philippines, China, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Nigeria.

"The best part is the event is expecting more than US$85 million worth of contracts to be sealed in the three-day event that began on Nov 9," he said.

Mah said this in his speech at the opening of the 7th Edition of Malaysia International Palm Oil & Agriculture Equipment Technology (PalmTech & AgroTech 2016) Expo and Conference held at Sabah Trade Centre, here.

Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai delivered Mah's speech at the event.

He also presented 2nd Malaysia Agro Excellence Awards to 15 recipients who are operating agricultural and palm oil activities.

Among them were four recipients such as agroprenuers and farmers from Sarawak, Selangor and Melaka who won the outstanding smallholder award, five recipients of the Master Agro awards, Healthy Horticulture Excellence Award, Agricultural Excellence Brand Award, Outstanding Agricultural Science and Modern Technology Award and Lifetime Agricultural Excellence Achievement Award.

Also present were the main organiser Worldex Trade Media Group Group Director Dato' Jerel Soo, Agricultural Protection and Development Association of Malaysia President Dato' Dr Chai Chen Hing, Gerakan Sabah Liaison Chief Datuk Gordon Leong, Sawit Kinabalu Group Managing Director Datuk Othman Wallat, Sabah Dairy Breeders Association Chairman Datuk Yap Yun Fook and Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB) former Director-General Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May and other officials.

Mah hoped the big players in the palm oil and agriculture industry attending the international event will complement the Government's efforts in developing its palm oil and agricultural activities.

He also hoped the participants would take the opportunity to play a significant part in Malaysia's aspiration to be a regional palm oil and agricultural hub.

Meanwhile, Jerel said the unique blend of this international event provides for a perfect platform to improve the technology and also facilitating ample networking opportunities for the industry.

He said the main objective of organising the 2nd Malaysia Agro Excellence Awards was to recognise the entrepreneurs, industry players and outstanding farmers from the agriculture industry for their hard work and outstanding yields.

Dr Chai, whose association co-organised the 2nd Malaysia Agro Excellence Awards, said the public should be grateful to farmers and agropreneurs in the country who work hard in supplying sufficient, quality, safe and clean food products to society.

He said these farmers and those who venture into the agriculture industry are the real heroes that need to be given recognition and respect.

"The 'Malaysia Agro Excellence Award' is given as recognition to selected companies, individuals and academic members that have made huge contributions to the agriculture sector in our country.

"Prior to making our final decision, we visited and interviewed 31 farms and individuals.

Of 19 contestants competing for the award, 15 were selected to be the recipients comprising five recipients for the Master Agro Award, five recipients from the individual category, four for the company category and one international company from Indonesia won the International category," Dr Chai said.
