Kota Kinabalu: Security enforcement agencies may have to rely on government to government ties should there be a need to seek the extradition of the 23 men sought by the Eastern Sabah Security Command for suspected involvement in cross-border crime in the east coast. "There is no extradition agreement with the Philippines which is not a Commonwealth country," said Deputy State Police Commissioner Dato' Awang Sahari E.M. Nadzeer, adding however that this could be done through government to government discussion.

On another matter, he said they welcome the new development by the Philippine government to allow Malaysian security enforcement agencies to enter the country's waters during hot pursuits of criminals.

"I cannot comment much about this as the matter is still being discussed and fine-tuned, it is based on discussions between both countries," he said. The Eastern Sabah Security Command had on Friday released a list of 23 individuals wanted by the enforcement agency for suspected links to the Abu Sayyaf terror group.

Most of them are Philippine nationals who have been in the country, a spokesman from the Esscom operations room based in Lahad Datu was quoted as saying.

Last Thursday, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, at a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Putrajaya, stated that he would allow Malaysian security forces to chase kidnapping groups right into Philippine waters.
