Melaka: The state Education Department has allowed 13 schools in the state to continue teaching Mathematics and Science in English, marking a victory for a parents' group which has been championing the cause.Malacca Action Group for Parents in Education (Magpie) chairman Mak Chee Kin said they had appealed for a reinstatement of the programme.

Malacca, he said, was the only state to allow all 13 schools that appealed for the dual language programme (DLP) in June to continue teaching the subjects in English.

"I must thank the state Education director Abu Bakar Sahari, who was with us through thick and thin during the appeal period while giving us the courage to continue championing the case.

"His vision is in line with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron's vision to make English the second language for the state government administration," Mak said when interviewed yesterday.

He said the teachers and parents were very excited over DLP, adding that he hoped a new generation of students would be able to excel in English, which was recognised globally with even China emphasising on development of the language.

"Many of us realise that our children could be left behind in the rapid pace of globalisation if they do not have a good command of English," Mak added.
