The all-women Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl (RCKK Pearl) has signed a historic Friendship Pact with the Rotary Club of Taipei (RCT), the oldest Rotary Club in Taiwan. This was the highlight of RCKK Pearl's five-day trip to Taipei by a 15-member delegation led by its President, Datuk Noni Said, to visit RCT headed by Stephen Tan, recently.

Incidentally, Rotary International Past President Gary Huang is from RCT.

The Agreement on the Friendship Pact was signed by Noni and Tan on behalf of their respective clubs during a RCT dinner meeting at the Caesar Park Hotel, attended by members of both clubs.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the President of the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre (MFTC), Datuk Adeline Leong, who is also the Charter President of RCKK Pearl, and RCT Honorary Secretary Grace Chung. The pact will be valid for two years subject to further extension by mutual agreement.

The delegation from RCKK Pearl included President-Elect Datuk Suzannah Liaw, Vice-President Susan Chang, Community Services Director Mary Chung, Vocational Services Director Majella Tan, International Services Director Datin Dr Tarsiah Taman, Sergeant-At-Arms Nar Chin Keow, Rotary Foundation Chair Tulip Abd Rahim and Public Relations Chair Denise Chua.

The Friendship Pact was the brainchild of RCT Past President Dr William Ka Lun Choi and Leong. Chartered on Sept 22 last year, the one-year old RCKK Pearl has a membership of 66 ladies while RCT, the oldest English-speaking club in Taiwan which was chartered 68 years ago in Taipei, has 98 members of 23 nationalities, including 13 ladies.

Noni said the Friendship Pact aims to foster good relationship between the two clubs and provide a platform for collaboration of activities of mutual interest.

In her speech, she spoke of building a bridge between two nations through the bonding of RCKK Pearl and RCT.

"Rotary Club of Taipei has also shown interest in the community projects carried out by RCKK Pearl.

As such, the two clubs are continuing their discussion on possible cooperation in relation to a few community projects in Sabah," she said.

Another highlight of the evening was the induction of Leong as an Honorary member of the RCT, apart from RCKK Pearl's effort to promote the many tourist attractions Sabah has to offer through screening the latest video clip from Sabah Tourism Board (STB) featuring renowned singer Gary Chao who is the Ambassador for STB.

Vocational Services Director Majella also distributed STB brochures to RCT members to promote Sabah as a tourist destination.
