Blackouts at Dewan due to wiring: PWD
Kota Kinabalu: THE Public Works Department (PWD) is looking into re-wiring the State Assembly building following repeated blackouts and unstable electrical supply during its sittings, the latest of which occurred on Monday. It's Director Datuk Amrullah Kamal (pic) said the department would re-inspect the wiring system in the whole building and ensure the incidents do not recur.

He denied that burnt fuses and cables caused the blackouts and shortage of power supply at the building.

"We were informed about the blackouts since mid-day and it is not true that burnt fuses or cables were the main cause.

"It is a normal short circuit due to overload of electricity as many people are using the power supply as there are caterers and others who may use the supply for work.

"We have not seen what the major problem is and as of now, some additional overloading and some power trips, so, we will check the entire wiring system in the building," he said, when met after inspecting the works of Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) staff in connecting the mobile generator set.

There were no lights at the banquet hall during an official programme of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa for the handing over of annual grants to non-Muslim organisations and schools which delayed the start of the event for an hour from 3pm to 4pm. "Luckily, the sitting at the main State Assembly hall was not affected as the lights, microphones and air-conditioning system remained functioning.

"Actually, we needed to switch off the electricity supply to the main State Assembly hall so that we could check and find the cause of the problem but we could not afford to do that as it would have disrupted the session.

"That is why we had to do something else and extra to ensure the power supply to the building resumes to ensure the sitting would not be affected," he said, referring to the mobile gen-set.
